What is a Water Safety Plan?

The most effective means of consistently ensuring the safety of a drinking water supply

🎯

WHO Framework

Water Safety Plans (WSP) are recommended by the World Health Organization as the most effective way to ensure safe drinking water. The approach is based on comprehensive risk assessment and risk management throughout the water supply chain - from catchment to consumer.

🔄

Systematic Approach

WSP replaces reactive end-product testing with proactive risk management. It systematically identifies where problems could occur in the water supply system and ensures control measures are in place to prevent contamination before it happens.

The WSP Process: Three Key Steps

1

System Assessment

Describe the water supply system and identify potential hazards and risks at each step from source to tap.

2

Control Measures

Identify and implement control measures to reduce or eliminate risks, and establish monitoring procedures.

3

Management Plans

Develop management plans including standard operating procedures, incident response, and continuous improvement.

Why Water Safety Plans Matter

Protecting public health through safe drinking water

🏥

Health Protection

Prevents waterborne diseases that affect millions globally, particularly in developing countries.

💰

Cost Savings

Proactive risk management is more cost-effective than reactive crisis response and treatment.

📊

Better Management

Provides systematic documentation and accountability for water system operations.

🎓

Capacity Building

Enhances technical knowledge and operational capacity of water system operators.

Ghana's Commitment to Safe Water

Ghana is implementing Water Safety Plans across its drinking water systems to meet SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and ensure safely managed drinking water services for all citizens. This digital platform supports systematic assessment and continuous improvement of water safety management.
